Decorating My Daughter’s Nursery

Designing and decorating Avery’s nursery was my absolute favorite thing I did in advance of her arrival. There’s something so cozy about welcoming a baby girl. Here’s 10 things I did/items I bought to make her nursery sweet and soft.

  1. Landed on a paint color

I was initially torn between light blue or light pink for Avery’s room, but with heavy influence from my traditional mom I landed on pink. Picking a pink became a task of its own and I made far too many trips to Benjamin Moore and Sherman Williams trying to find the right shade. Inspired by influencer Krystal Schlegel, I chose the same shade of pink in her daughter’s nursery: Pink Bliss by Benjamin Moore.

  1. Picked a crib

I knew I wanted a white/traditional crib. Not gray, not lacquer, not the modern glass ones…you get the point. I also didn’t want to spend a fortune (No Restoration Hardware for this baby!). I landed on this Jenny Lind timeless crib which will eventually transform into her “Big Girl Bed”.

  1. Sought Help for Window Treatments

New parents hear so much about blackout curtains, but I wasn’t adamant about them only because I didn’t want to foster a sleeping environment so specific that she wouldn’t sleep in other places. Spoiler alert: She didn’t sleep too well in light or dark rooms so do what you want! I worked with one of my best friends and designer extraordinaire Vernona Pappas on pulling together a beautiful garden fabric for Avery’s nursery. Nona knew just what to do and combined a standout fabric with a pink base. It’s what makes her nursery standout most and Nona also pulled this look and feel through with Avery’s ottoman, accent pillow, and artwork above her crib.

Bonus: These Serena and Lily sheets complement the garden theme!

  1. Snagged a Glider

Glider, Rocker, Day Bed – oh my! If I had more space and more money, I’d go with a custom daybed from Casita Dallas. Instead, I went with a simple cream glider from Maisonette. I’m not raving about its comfort, but it gets the job done and fits the corner well. My husband and I both fit it well enough.

  1. Bought a dresser

This was another item I refused to pay an arm and a leg for. Enter, Craigslist. I bought a white hemnes 3-drawer Ikea dress from a grad student at Georgia Tech. I bought new brass knobs and voila, I had a dresser.

  1. Picked a ceiling light

The Hampton chandelier from Circa Lighting I had seen quite a few times and it matched the garden theme Nona and I anchored on perfectly.

  1. Nightstand

Nona selected a cool wicker nightstand from Serena Lily. I went back and forth thinking I’d want something wooden for say a glass of water at night, but the rattan one (currently sold out) works nicely and it added an element of interest to the room. Here’s a similar rattan option from Urban Outfitters.

  1. Mirror

Every nursery needs a mirror so your cute baby can look at themselves! My mom let me have the one in my sister’s childhood room and I had it painted white. It’s heavy so I got it professionally secured to the wall. If I had to buy one, I’d pick this naturalist mirror or this pretty (albeit more expensive) one.

  1. Bookshelves

The clear bookshelves for a baby’s wall can be found anywhere…which is why I went with this cheaper Amazon option. Who can tell the difference between these and the higher price point at Pottery Barn Kids? Not me!

  1. Custom Closet

Influencer Amy Havins inspired me here. I saw how cute her daughter’s closet was and worked with Closet Designs and More on mine. Got these pink hangers, a few bins, and voila.
